Necks

Shape

I’ve made a variety of neck shapes since I’ve started building guitars. The shape that I’ve got the most positive response from, that is now stock on all my guitars, is a slim “C” shape. It’s slightly narrower than say, a typical Martin from the last 20 years. Of course, any shape or width, is possible. The idea is to make it fit your hand and playing style. When it’s built to fit you, the result is an instrument you won’t want to put down. The necks are constructed using a lamination of quarter-sawn woods, typically mahogany, maple, or rosewood, or walnut. I use laminations because they are stiffer and straighter and will help the neck stay that way for life of the guitar.

Neck Joint

My stock neck joint is a bolted mortise and tenon. Should a neck-reset ever become necessary, it allows super easy neck adjustments without removing the fretboard. I have also used dovetail joints and will do so upon request. A dovetail joint is a fine, traditional joint, but I do not believe it offers any significant benefit to sound.
